Particle-Laden Turbulent Channel Flow with Wall-Roughness

2015

Turbulent flows transporting a dispersed-phase are found in many environmental applications and engineering devices. Particle-laden flows are characterized by several peculiar phenomenologies such as preferential particle concentration and turbulence modulation of the carrier-phase due to the presence of the inertial particles [1].

Travelling Panels Interacting with External Flow

2013

This chapter is devoted to the analysis of the travelling panel, submerged in axially flowing fluid. In order to accurately model the dynamics and stability of a lightweight moving material, the interaction between the material and the surrounding air must be taken into account somehow. The light weight of the material leads to the inertial contribution of the surrounding air to the acceleration of the material becoming significant. In the small displacement regime, the geometry of the vibrating panel is approximately flat, and hence flow separation is unlikely. We will use the model of potential flow for the fluid. The approach described in this chapter allows for an efficient semi-analyti…

Speeding-Up Differential Motion Detection Algorithms Using a Change-Driven Data Flow Processing Strategy

2007

A constraint of real-time implementation of differential motion detection algorithms is the large amount of data to be processed. Full image processing is usually the classical approach for these algorithms: spatial and temporal derivatives are calculated for all pixels in the image despite the fact that the majority of image pixels may not have changed from one frame to the next. By contrast, the data flow model works in a totally different way as instructions are only fired when the data needed for these instructions are available. Here we present a method to speed-up low level motion detection algorithms. This method is based on pixel change instead of full image processing and good spee…

International student mobility in Southern-Latin Europe: beyond the EU logics, towards a new space

2018

This paper discusses international student mobility (ISM) in Southern-Latin Europe, specifically Italy, Portugal, and Spain, analysing the inflow of international students as reflected in the UNESCO, OECD and European Commission databases. Only recently Italy, Portugal and Spain, as latecomers, have become more actively involved in ISM dynamics. This trend has been a response to EU pressures to internationalization, instrumented through the consolidation of the Bologna process and the need to build a common space of higher education. The analysis shows that at the intra-European level Italy, Portugal and Spain share similar ISM patterns; however, in the global context other logics shape ISM…

Analysis of complex singularities in high-Reynolds-number Navier-Stokes solutions

2013

AbstractNumerical solutions of the laminar Prandtl boundary-layer and Navier–Stokes equations are considered for the case of the two-dimensional uniform flow past an impulsively-started circular cylinder. The various viscous–inviscid interactions that occur during the unsteady separation process are investigated by applying complex singularity analysis to the wall shear and streamwise velocity component of the two solutions. This is carried out using two different methodologies, namely a singularity-tracking method and the Padé approximation. It is shown how the van Dommelen and Shen singularity that occurs in solutions of the Prandtl boundary-layer equations evolves in the complex plane be…

Numerical and experimental MHD studies of Lead-Lithium liquid metal flows in multichannel test-section at high magnetic fields

2018

Abstract Numerical simulation and experiments have been performed at high magnetic fields (1–3T) to study the MHD assisted molten Lead-Lithium (PbLi) flow in a model test-section which has typical features of multiple parallel channel flows as foreseen in various blanket module of ITER. The characteristics Hartmann number of the presented case study is up to 1557 which is relevant to typical fusion blanket conditions. Symbols B0, a, σ, μ in the definition of Hartmann number are strength of the applied magnetic field, characteristic length scale which is half the channel width parallel to the magnetic field, electrical conductivity and dynamic viscosity of PbLi respectively. Flow distributio…

Influence of the porosity profile and sets of Ergun constants on the main hydrodynamic parameters in the trickle-bed reactors

2014

Abstract The Eulerian multiphase code has been applied for the comparative simulation of the experimental results obtained for varying flow rates of both fluid phases and for systems of various physicochemical properties used in the laboratory trickle-bed reactor (TBR). Therefore six different radial porosity profiles and three sets of the Ergun constants used in the relations defining the interphase momentum exchange have been implemented into the CFD code. The mean relative error of the pressure drop and of the averaged holdup as well as the standard deviation determined with respect to the experiments have been used as the criterion for the validation of the theoretical model. These valu…

Evaluation of positron-emission-tomography for visualisation of migration processes in geomaterials

2008

Abstract Positron-emission-tomography (PET) was applied for direct visualisation of solute transport in order to overcome the limitations of conventional methods for measuring advection and diffusion properties. At intervals from minutes to days the 3D-spatial distribution of the PET-tracer is determined. This spatiotemporal evolution of the tracer concentration can be used as experimental basis for clarification of the relevant transport processes, derivation of transport parameters, and model calibration. Here, 18 F and 124 I in 0.01 M carrier solution of KF and KI, respectively, have been chosen out of the limited number of available PET-tracers, primarily on account of their decay time …

On the hydraulic behaviour of ITER Shield Blocks #14 and #08. Computational analysis and comparison with experimental tests

2016

Abstract As a consequence of its position and functions, the ITER blanket system will be subjected to significant heat loads under nominal reference conditions. Therefore, the design of its cooling system is particularly demanding. Coolant water is distributed individually to the 440 blanket modules (BMs) through manifold piping, which makes it a highly parallelized system. The mass flow rate distribution is finely tuned to meet all operation constraints: adequate margin to burn out in the plasma facing components, even distribution of water flow among the so-called plasma-facing “fingers” of the Blanket First Wall panels, high enough water flow rate to avoid excessive water temperature in …

CFD prediction of concentration polarization phenomena in spacer-filled channels for Reverse Electrodialysis

2014

Abstract Salinity Gradient Power generation through Reverse Electrodialysis (SGP-RE) is a promising technology to convert the chemical potential difference of a salinity gradient into electric energy. In SGP-RE systems, as in most membrane processes, concentration polarization phenomena may affect the theoretical driving force and thus the performance of the process. Operating conditions, including the feed solution flow rate and concentration and the channels׳ geometrical configuration, may greatly influence both the polarization effect and the pumping energy consumption. The present work uses CFD to investigate the dependence of concentration polarization and pressure drop on flow rate, f…
